Are You Serious?
Monday, July 14th, 2008Friday night I got together with Bill, Scott and Chris and we practiced for the third time. Again things were better this practice than last. That’s a good sign. We are coming together as a group and things are moving forward. We practiced from about 7 to 10:30.
After that I headed back into town and met up with Band Mom and some friends who were at a karaoke night. They were scouting for entrants in this years Washington Idol contest that’s going to be held at the Arts & Heritage festival next month. This was the most painful event I’ve ever seen. I understand drunk people having fun at karaoke. I really do. Its even fun to sing songs that you know you shouldn’t sing just for a laugh. But some of these people were really giving it their all thinking they owned a song, when in reality the song owned them.
I feel sorry for the committee that is going to 2 karaoke nights a week at different bars around the area looking for contestants for the competition. How they can sit through 3 to 4 hours of that pain to find the 1 or 2 capable singers is beyond me. Granted there were a couple of truly good singers but the ratio of good to completely painful was like 1:1000000000. Some of these people really think they have a shot at the $1000 prize in the competition. How does no one ever tell these people that they shouldn’t sing in public.
The worst part of this particular event was that it was at a private club. So to not get the member who got us in in any kind of trouble, I had to hold my laughter and comments to myself. That was tough. To pretend to enjoy each singer and clap after each song. You try to smile as someone drags their fingernails across a chalk board and claim it is art!
